A debate on the value of seedbanks and germplasm was started on December 28, 2002 by a post to Ag BioView by Andrew Apel. The exchange compares the productivity of Iowa corn farmers versus farmers in Oaxaca, Mexico and leads to a statement by Apel that genebanks and landraces are "...worthless...".
